I saw President Obama standing at attention saluting the flag at the air base where the casualties were landing. I know that he is commander-in-chief but is this proper protocol? I thought that only those in uniform or veterans not in uniform were the ones that gave a proper salute.

This weekend I observed a disturbing display. American soldiers in uniform at a football game displaying the flag improperly. They had the flag reveresed with the canton on the flags right as you faced it. It was being carried onto the field by members of the U. S. Army at the UTC vs Citidel game in Chattanooga on 11/14/09. Do they not teach our soldiers how to properly display the flag any longer.

When lowering the flag to Half Staff and subsequently raising it back to full staff, what is the order of precedence when both the US and a state flag are flown? It is not addressd on this site anywhere that I've found. I would think that you lower the US flag first and raise it last, but it would give the appearance that it is flying lower than the state flag. Some guidance please?
Donald English, Kingsville, TX [11-14-2009]
Facing the flags. On left the U.S. Flag and under it is the POW/MIA Flag. On the Flag Pole to the right is the State Flag. I beleive the state flag should be lowered equal to or slightly lower than the POW/MIA flag. Am I right ?

After entering a building, one walks into a long hallway. There is a place for the US Flag and the Michigan Flag on opposite sides of the hallway. What side of the hallway should the flag be flown. I say the left. p.s. The school in question has the flag on the right side. I say it is incorrect.

After spending over 26 years in the USMC, I read the flag codes and found out there was a lot I did not know about the rules. Question: The code says that no flag should be worn on clothing. What about the flight suits and jackets that we wore in the military with the flag on it? Where we and is our military breaking the rules?

Presidential proclamation November 6th in reference to lowering the flag to half staff regarding Ft. Hood massacare. Language orders all installations, ships and federal offices to lower the flag. No wording inviting/encouraging the private sector to lower the flag. We are having a controversy at our Legion Post. When we are marching in a parade of displaying the colors, say at a football game, we have three flags. US flag, our post flag and a POW flag. I say the US flag should be on its own right, next our post flag and then the POW flag on the marching or standing left. Others say that the US flag should be centered between the other two. Who is right? Dave Warren 2nd Vice Commander Chaplain Hannan-Colvin Post #180

Help. At a cub scout meeting we discussed flag ettiquete and rules. One hypothetical qestion arose with much debate. Scenario: a scout is camping and becomes lost/separated from his group. He has an American flag in his backpack. It is night and he is alone and only has the flag to use to keep warm and to basically stay alive. Is this a violation? I say no way. Common sense.

Why do sports teams continue to put flags on their uniforms?anne continue to display large flags horizontally before games (like the all star games)?! I know this has been v popular since 9/11 but it perpetuates the incorrect display of the flag! I'm v patriotic and love seeing the US flag displayed and respected but even so this isn't correct according to everything I've read about correct display. Also what is the ruling on ironing/pressing the flag after hand washing?

Question? If the American Flag is being either presented or posted during a ceremony should it be the only flag on display? On several occasions I have noticed that there are sometimes numerous American Flags flown at the same time and remain that way while another American flag is either posted or presented for the purpose of a formal opening of a ceremony. The Gov. of CT stated that all flags in CT would be lowered to half mast today in respect for a soldier recently killed from CT. I noticed that our flag in front of the Post Office was at full mast. As I approached the flag pole to lower it there was a fall decoration of Cornstalks tied to the flag pole. I was able to lower the flag then went to my boss who knew that the decoration was at the flag pole. He and my supervisor both knew that it was out there. I said that I didn't think it was proper to have a decoration of any kind attached to the flag pole. It was removed later in the day. I have now searched the website and have not found anything stating the protocol of the flag pole. Could you shed some light on this so I don't look like a crazy american. Myself as well as my husband, our fathers, and two of our sons have served proudly. One son is still active duty army having one tour in Afghanistan and now on US Soil. Thankyou for your time and consideration. God Bless, Barbara Channels

Hi! I'm a custom picture framer. A client has brought two flags and a newspaper to be framed together. These belonged to her great grandfather. She asked me to research the best, most respectful and appropriate way to display these items together. One is a US Flag...older...from between the Civil War and WWI. It is already nicely and appropriately folded. The newspaper is the Washington Times Herald from Wed., Aug. 15, 1945 proclaiming in giant letters: Truman Announces 'WAR IS OVER'. The second flag is a Nazi flag in absolutely fine condition (not at all faded, even the ribbons meant to attach it to a pole are in perfect shape.) It is not folded. (It is pretty eerie.) I've framed dozens and dozens of flags over the years...lots of Confederate flags that flew above our capital building on the last day as well as plenty of South Carolina flags...all frequently framed with a letter of authenticity. I am a certified custom framer...but I've got no idea how to fold the Nazi flag for a respectful display. My idea is to leave the US Flag folded and stitch it to a 100% linen covered, acid-free, 8-ply mat above the newspaper (also conversationally mounted) and have the Nazi flag folded at the bottom. Would it be appropriate to fold it using the same method as the US Flag? As a First Class Girl Scout and after framing so many other flags, I'm quite capable of folding it....but is doing so a violation of the flag code? Please advice me! Thanks! I heard a soundbite concerning the B of A scandal and the Honor of the Marine. In the soundbite one of your men was saying that they were signing American flags and sending them to someone or somewhere. I can't remember. You should know better than anyone that signing a flag is DESECRATION of that flag. You should re-read section 8G of the flag code.

Our neighbors recently displayed the German Flag (Black,Red,Gold), vertically, during the Jewish High Holidays. To our knowledge, they are not German/Jewish, but I read recently that it is respectful as it is flown in Germany (in January) as commemorative to the closing of the concentration camps. Is this true or would there be another reason for flying the German flag during these important holidays for Jews?

My grandson, Isaiah drowned at 3 years old. His grandfather has been with the fire dept for 18 years. As we processed to the gravesite, a fire station had the flag at half-staff. Three fireman in front of station stood with hands over hearts. It moved me so much. Can a civilan, my Isaiah, given such an honor without state or city permission? There were 8 engines total at Isaiah funeral. 2 engines ahead of the hearst then 4 at sites along the way. One at the end. Then at the middle the engine outfront with the flag half-staff. In Kansas, all traffic must stop for funeral processions. I was told that some states do not have this great honor. Such a shame. I can not explain the deeply respectable honor it gave us to see them all just being there.

I recently in Thrift World North 90th St. Omaha NE (second hand store) I found 3 USA flags located in the blanket section, hanging on hangers. I requested the flags be displayed with respect. The manager present (Steven)denied my request for the flags to displayed in an appropriate manner and show respect for the USA flags. After heated words, I was requested to leave the store and the flags would be replaced to the blanket racks. He suggested the only recourse was that I buy the flags. I reminded him that the larger flag was obviously on a coffin of a Veteran that died for our country and there were Veterans dying for him to be able to live in this country and the freedom he has. I bought the flags, the larger one will be going to a Veterans of Foreign wars agency, the smaller ones will be given to my church/school for appropriate display.

Joe, Galloway, NJ [09-11-2009]
Your flag ruules and regulations page stated this was how to display the flag inside. When displayed from a staff in a church or public auditorium on or off a podium, the flag of the United States of America should hold the position of superior prominence, in advance of the audience, and in the position of honor at the clergyman's or speaker's right as he faces the audience. Any other flag so displayed should be placed on the left of the clergyman or speaker (to the right of the audience). Please note that the old guidelines differed from this updated and simplified one My question is what were the old guidelines and when did they change? I seem to remember that there was a rule when displayed on a stage it was to the speaker's right and if it was displayed off the stage then it was the audience's right.
Earl Scharff, Meridian ID/Ret USAF and Police Officer [09-10-2009]
In a public meeting room, the flag is displayed properly behind the speaker's platform and to the left of the assembly. But, another flag is positioned at the entry door - to the right of entering visitors. The flag, thus displayed, would be to the right of the seated audience, unless they would turn around. I've been under the belief that the flag should be to the left upon approaching a building - or in this case, entering a room. Is the right side placement of the flag at the right side of the door, upon entry, proper etiquette? Or, is it that, in the perspective of dignitaries at the dais, the flag would appear to their respective left at the rear of the room - thence proper from their viewpoint?
Richard, Albany, NY [09-09-2009]
Thank you, A very helpful resource regarding flag etiquette! We have a project where there are four seperate flag poles in a linear row. We originally intended to have the left flagpole at 50'(American Flag) and the preceding 3 to the right of the American Flag at 40'(State,City,Park Name). After reading the FAQ section of your website, is it better to have all four of the flag poles at the same height? Does it matter if the American Flag pole is higher than the other three? Let me know when you get a chance

My husband's place of employment flies the US Flag, the Christian Flag, and the flags of the 5 states that are in our territory. The poles are all the same height, but the middle pole is the most prominent, as the poles are in a curve, so that is where the US Flag is. We have affixed an eagle to the top of the center pole to make it even more prominent, but still receive complaints from people passing by on the highway that they find the way we fly the flag "offensive". We certainly love our country and don't want to offend anyone. It would cost thousands of dollars to get a taller center pole. Should the US flag be flown on the right, instead, even though that position is not as prominent?

At a function, they had a flag procession, but did not ask the audience to stand until the flag was at the front of the building. In high school, we would ask the audience to rise for the presentation of our colors and then the flag bearers would march the flag from the back to the front, all the while those in the audience would pay the proper respect. With this in mind, I stood as the flag passed and paid proper respect. I felt silly being the only one in the building to do so, but I felt that it was only right. What is the correct thing to do in a situation like this? What should be done by those presenting the flag?

Please explain USC, Sec 7 (c) of Title 4, Chapter 1; This sec. prohibits the display of a foregin flag in honor to (another nation), or in place of the US Flag... I am confused about your account below... From your FAQ page: I have a neighbor flying a Mexican flag and no US flag. Is this a violation of the flag code? The Flag Code requires that the US flag be flown on federal institutions, including public schools. It does not require you to fly the US flag and it does not forbid you from displaying a foreign flag. For example, someone with Irish heritage may proudly fly an Irish flag and is not required to fly the US flag. In the early 1900s there was hostility when the German flag was flown in the US, prompting Theodore Roosevelt to state that we had one flag, and one language. We are again revisiting tensions, this time it is the Mexican flag. We understand the emotional tensions of the situation, however, the Flag Code does not support those who wish to forbid the flying of the Mexican flag within our borders without also flying the US flag. •In the News:: US town bars foreign flags in swipe at immigrants [November 16, 2006]

My son Cory completed two tours of duty in Iraq. He was honorably discharged in September 2008. He sustained injuries that led to his death on May 8, 2009. At his grave we erected a flagpole and have also installed a solar powered light on the pole so the flag is lit at night. Not far from where my son is buried is the grave of a young man who was killed in Iraq. His grave also has a flag and pole. It has been suggested by his family that we should not have placed the flag at my son's grave because he was not killed in Iraq. Have we done something wrong? The death of my son has devastated his family and friends. Does he really deserve less respect because he died of his injuries at home instead of on the battlefield? What is the proper ettiquite for a situation like this. Please help

So what about this and that about the flag. It has no feelings! thank GOD i violate every Supposedly rule you have here. Its not that i dont care but ITS JUST A FLAG. Like at home, i have two posts. Top post to fly the flag high and the lower one as a symbol of having it at half mast, and well i keep it at half mast all the time. Like when Michael Jackson died, i moved it from the top post to the lower one as a symbol of having the flag at half mast. People really need to get a life then worry about as stupid as a flag and how it is to be presented. WHO CARES!

Could anyone tell me why the United States Army in Iraq is requiring Soldiers to wear "subdued" flags on the uniform? Section 1 of the flag code states that the stripes should be read and white with a blue star field and white stars. There is no operational need to have a subdued flag because the flag is velcro and can easily be removed when the tactical situation requires camoflauge. Also the flag used is Infra-red for view through night optical devices but such identifier could also be something other than a falg. Besides, there are full-color infrared flags available commercially, but they are not authorized for wear. Section 10 of the code states that the Commander-in-Chief can authorize alterations, but I can find no such Executive Order. I believe that subdueing the U.S. Flag is the ultimte in disrespect and for now I am refusing to do so until someone convinces me that this is a lawful order.

I want my United States Flag in the place of honor when flying in these United State of America. When there is any line of flags the US Flag should be in the middle and the tallest of the three. It does not matter what the other three flags are. Who has made this rule that the POW flag is to be the middle flag? I also honor the POW's, but the flag should be on the right side of the US Flag not in the middle where the US Flag should be. No one dares to speak out and say what should be because they think it will be dishonoring the POW's, but I think they would also feel as I do as they died for that Flag and love it as I do. Put it back where it belongs!

My father was a veteran of WWII. He was a surviver of Pearl Harbor. He taught my brother and me all about the proper flag diplay. When I was a child in school, we were taught the same, repect for our American Flag. Some people that use the American Flag for clothing, and other things should read up on the flag code. It would do them good. And as for my father, and the teachers that I had in school, they would be very offended on how we treat the American Flag to-day. We took great care of our Flag.

On July 3,2009 I arrived home and found a pennant of the US flag placed in my yard. This was a synthetic flag with a stick approx. 2-3 ft. in length attached (ie, flag pole)and not so carefully placed at arms length from the road. I noticed a card attached to the pole. Upon further inspection I discovered it was a local real estate agent's business card. Is this a violation of the flag code specifically in Arkansas? Are realtors allowed to use the US flag as an advertising tool? Agent placed aprroximately 75 pennants in yards, many of which were leaning and touching the ground. There is more to this escalating encounter.

i believe it is appropriate today to fly the flag up side down due to the distress created by the idiot in the white house. i have respect for the flag and country, but not the hacks in washington who are destroying the u.s. also, due to washington killing the country, the flag should be flown at half staff for a dying america. soon, oboma will be having us say "comrade" instead of "sir" and instead of a salute to the eyebrow as now is the custom, the hand must be entended frontward in a 45 degree angle and did the germans in 1938. most people do not know what the flag stands for and the reason for the stars and stripes. in otherwords, 80% are plain ignorant.

I strongly disagree with the idea that it is disrespectful to display the flag upside down when Fascists are taking over your country, and the people are as asleep as were the "Good Germans" during Hitler's era. It fits, and is MOST respectful of those who shed their blood for a free country. Remember, "corporatism" is another word for fascism, and just take a look at what really governs this country now. Did anyone see Bill Moyers last night, as he interviewed a former corporate health care man? This guy showed how the congresspeople are just mouthpieces for corporate health "care." Congress, both Republican and Democrat, could care less what the people think, need or want! They are owned by Corporate Amerika, unfortunately.

There is no legal code on flags, only a checkered history of flag etiquette enacted and sustained by a relatively small number of folks who don't have anything better to do with their lives than worship a piece of material. The flag is only a symbol. To worship it is to commit idolatry. It is a much greater testament to commit to the professed ideals of our nation than to rabidly focus on a flag. That only demeans the very symbol many claim to exhort.

I must say that my love for our great country and flag came at a very early and young age. My father, now deceased and Vietnam veteran pounded it into my thick head the significants of these glorious colors. And now I'm proud to say, I too am very pationate of this flag as I have severed 15 years in the Army and still serving today... I have taken on the teachings of my father and I proudly let people know when the flag is not properly displayed. It aggervates me like no tomorrow how disrepectful and unaware of how to properly display Ole Glory.... I feel that Flag etiquette should be taught in ALL schools not just military schools. If this country is good enough for you to live in and take shelter in then these colors should be repected and protected.. I have a question about order of flags. We have a T-shaped flag pole with a longer pole in the center but the pole has been modified so the flag will only go to the same height as the flag on the left and right. Right now we have the American flag on the left than the Japanese flag in center and the POW/MIA on the right. The center pole looks as if it is higher but since we can not fly our flag higher than the Japanese it is blocked off. What should be the correct order of the flags. Also since it is a single pole that Tees, would that mean we can only fly two flags? Please if you could help with this matter it will be greatly appercated. I am asking this question as a pastor. In the eighth grade I first had to learn flag etiquette rules. I distinctly remember, and we were using a blue brochure type of instruction booklet that had flag diagrams with each rule, that in a house of worship the Christian flag could be given the place of honor over the American flag, i. e. we would "display the Christian flag on the flag's own right." As a Christian, I believe that must be our priority, for we are citizens of the Kingdom of God above being citizens of the USA or any other earthly nation. However, this does not seem to be the regulation at the present time in any literature I can find. I would appreciate commentary as to this situation. As a Christian Jesus Christ must be my number one priority over my country.

I thought that using the flag for decoration in general, such as Johnsburg,IL does, from telephone poles and displayed over night without being illuminated is against flag etiquette and why is it allowed.

Was just wanting to know opinions and rules regarding flags in portraits. I've seen flags with babies "wrapped in them" alone and I think with military fathers holding baby wrapped in flag. What are the "rules" regarding flags used as props in pictures? I don't want to offend anyone if I take any portraits using a flag. I did see that the first ammendment does protect us from any "mis-use" of the flag. GRANTED- I do not intend on MIS-USING the flag or anything... is this just one of those do as you see fit kind of things?

I disagree that the flag can't be worn as a shirt so long as it isn't made "from" a flag and is shown the same respect as a real flag.

The Flag Code Title, under Position and Manner of Display(7) states in (f) When flags of States, cities or localities, or pennants of societies are flown on the same halyard with the flag of the United States, the latter should always be at the peak.... I thought there were strict limitations on what could be flown on the same pole as the Flag(e.g. P.O.W. - M.I.A flag and state, etc. This seems to open it up to anything. Help me on this. Thank you

Our company has three flag poles, each of the same height. One flag is the U.S. flag, one is the Iowa state flag, and one is the company flag. How should they be flown? Also, would it be better that the U.S. flag pole was the tallest and in the center? Thank you.

I am a veteran, and it is important to me to show my love of this country by flying the flag. It disturbs me how many people and or companies show disrespect to the flag by displaying it improperly. Learn about it, don't just by a flag and hang it up, and DO NOT buy a flag made in China!

My husband is deployed right now and I have recently hung the American flag outside our home. Thank you for this website, it has answered all my questions. I just paniced due to not bringing the flag in last night - which will not happen again. We do have street lights yet it doesn't feel right leaving it out without a specific illuminating light. God bless, Teri

Need some support in contacting "Valero" headquarters to request the removal of the American flags displayed outside their gas station in Buena Park, CA (cross streets - Crescent Ave., and Grand, across the street from Knott's Berry Farm). They have written a symbol across the flags in black marker with "Valero Gas" written on the white stripe. We have men and women fighting and dying under our flag and they are using it to promot gas sales. I've asked that they be taken down and replaced with no response. Please contact customer.relations@valero.com to request the removal of these flags and that they be replaced. Regards, Lisa A. Nieves

We have the Marine Corp flag hanging on a pole mounted on the front of our house. It is a two sided flag, so the words can be read from both sides. I have the top of the eagle closest to the house so that the words on the bottom of the flag can be read by people passing by. My husband says that this is not right. Help me out.

Every time I visit my dentist's office, his wife's new car displayes the US Flag in the right rear window. It is backwards. I always thought it should be positioned that the stars would be closest to the driver, instead, she has it positioned stripes first & stars to the rear. I thought that was a sign of surrender. I always remind him "his wife is still driving backwards?" the reply is "she likes it like that. Can u tell me if positioning it that was is disrespectful. Also if you place it on the back of your vehicle, it should be on the left side, and of course the stars are positioned on the left. It irritates me. Am I right or wrong. Can you tell me the proper way?

I work at Costco and we had an American flag display. When they took it down I took it and put it in a plastic cover so not to get dirty and I placed it at my work station to keep it safe. Two days later my manager had me bring him the flag to display it again but he decided not to put it up after all. He told me to put it under the book table on a pallet of boxes, I told him it's our flag and i don't feel that it would be respectful to our flag or the men and women who served and died for or country. He threatened me with insubordination and he started yelling at me in front of other employees. I've been in to see his manager and he thinks it's no big deal to store our flag that way and felt I was insubordnat to him and then he informed me that he was and eagle scout. WOW! WHAT HAPPENED TO AMERICA?

When carrying the US and State flags in a procession indoors, doesn't the US flag start out on the right side and cross over in front of the state flag in front of the stage and placed on the left side of the stage (to the right of the speaker)? We are about to have our elementary school graduation ceremony and would like to follow protocol.

Hello, my family noticed that there are three different flags used regularly, a tiny one for inclement weather, a standard flag, and a huge one for Sundays/American holidays. Our question concerns their weight. How much does that huge flag weigh, and how hard is it to raise? Thanks!

Hi. Hoping someone can asnwer a question for us. If we're flying a US flag and a US Army flag on the same pole, is it proper protocol to leave the Army flag below the US flag when it's at half mast, or should we take down the Army flag until the flag is raised to full staff? Thank you for your help and the great web site and info you provide.
