Penn Mutual
Now walk to 510 Walnut to the former Penn Mutual Life Insurance building. Note the Egyptian Revival facade, designed by John Haviland, a well known Philadelphia architect whose other works include Eastern State Penitentiary, Walnut Street Theater, and the Atwater-Kent Museum.
This facade was once part of Haviland's Pennsylvania Fire Insurance Company Building, built in 1838. The facade was incorporated into a new Penn Mutual Tower, designed by Theophilus Chandler. in the early 1970s.
Penn Mutual now has its corporate headquarters in Horsham PA. The building has been renamed 1 Washington Square by its new owners and is a condominium complex.
